Understanding Kids' Shoe Sizing Systems
Shopping for children's footwear online can be tricky because sizing standards vary across countries and shoe manufacturers. Unlike adult shoes, children's feet pass through rapid developmental phases that require flexible soles, toe room, and distinct labeling conventions.
1. US Kids (C vs. Y)
Child (0C–13.5C): From infant booties up to preschool. Once outgrown, the scale transitions to Youth (1Y–7Y) before entering adult sizes.
2. UK & India Sizing
UK sizes run roughly 0.5 to 1 full size smaller than US. In India, major brands follow the UK numerical scale, though some imported labels show EU numbers.
3. European (EU) System
EU sizes use Paris points (approx. 6.67 mm increments). EU sizing runs in a continuous sequence from toddler 16 up to adult 40+, without restarting.
Pediatric Fit Checklist Before Buying Online:
- Measure both feet while your child is standing upright with full weight on the paper.
- Always fit to the larger foot (most children have slight asymmetries).
- Ensure there is 10–12 mm (roughly a thumb's width) of wiggle room ahead of the longest toe.
- For toddlers, check fit every 2–3 months as bones and arches develop rapidly.
