Common questions from parents about measuring, fit allowances, and international size conversions.
To find a child's US shoe size from inches, measure the foot from heel to longest toe and add approximately 0.5 inches (12 mm) for growth. For example, a 6-inch foot measurement corresponds to approximately a US 7C or 8C toddler shoe, while an 8-inch foot measurement corresponds to a US 13C or 1Y youth shoe.
In the US sizing system, Big Kids / Youth (Y) sizes convert to Women's sizes by adding 1.5 to 2 sizes. For example, a youth size 4Y fits like a women's 5.5, a 5Y fits like a women's 6.5, and a 6Y fits like a women's 7.5.
Most 3-year-olds wear between a US 8C and 10C toddler shoe (approx. UK 7.5–9.5 / EU 25–27), with an average foot length between 14 cm and 15.5 cm (5.5 to 6.1 inches). Because feet vary, measuring with a ruler is always recommended.
Most 5-year-olds wear between a US 11C and 13C (approx. UK 10–12 / EU 28–31). However, children's feet vary significantly in length even at the exact same age. We strongly recommend measuring your child's foot with a ruler rather than guessing by age alone.
Podiatrists and fitting specialists recommend ~10 to 15 mm (roughly 0.4 to 0.6 inches, or a thumb's width) of extra room between the child's longest toe and the tip of the shoe. Our calculator automatically factors in ~12 mm of growing room into every measurement-based recommendation.
In the US sizing system, 'C' stands for Child (also known as toddler or little kid), running from 1C up to 13.5C. Once children outgrow 13.5C, the sizing scale transitions into 'Y' (Youth / Big Kid), which restarts from 1Y and runs up to 7Y (after which sizing enters adult sizing).
UK kids sizes are generally 0.5 to 1 full size smaller than US sizes (e.g. US 12C is roughly UK 11). Indian retailers predominantly use the UK size standard, although some brands label with EU sizes. EU sizing uses Paris Points (approx 6.67 mm increments), so a US 12C converts to approximately EU 29.
Always round up to the next larger size. Because children's feet grow rapidly (often an entire size every 3 to 4 months for toddlers), a slightly roomier shoe can be worn comfortably with socks, whereas a tight shoe restricts foot bones and causes discomfort.
